The Labour & Consumer Inspectorate would like to remind all Dangerous Goods Licence Holders that Dangerous Goods Licences for the period of 2019-2020 will expire on the 31st of March 2020, as per the Dangerous Goods Act 1984.
In the Cook Islands, the Dangerous Goods Act 1984 provides the legal framework for the handling and storage of dangerous goods. It is important to handle these goods accordingly for the safety of your business but also for the safety of your customers and the general public.
Dangerous goods are substances or articles that pose a risk to people, property or the environment, due to their chemical or physical properties. They are usually classified with reference to their immediate risk and follow the UN classification under 9 groups, such as Petrol, Diesel and LPG.
No person shall store or use dangerous goods without being licenced under the above Act. Licences are issued on an annual basis, with a fee of $250.00 for new Licences and $100.00 for renewals.
Dangerous Goods Licence Holders within the Cook Islands who stores and handles Dangerous Goods of quantities greater than 200 Litres, which includes Petrol & Diesel Service Centres, Hotel Operators, businesses, retailers and restaurants, is encouraged to notify the Inspectorate of the intention to renew their DG Licence before Sunday 8th of March.
Upon notification, a Renewal of Dangerous Goods Licence Form and an Invoice will be issued. The Inspectorate will also carry out Inspections to ensure the integrity of the premises of the Dangerous Goods Licence holder. The Renewal of Dangerous Goods Licence Form must be completed and submitted along with payments to the Ministry of Internal Affairs before Friday 13th March 2020.
