The Public Service Commissioner, Russell Thomas met with a cohort of students today, Thursday 24 September 2020, made up of Managers from the Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa. Under the guidance of Jane Wichman-Poa of CITTI, these students are taking an Operations Management course and are visiting various organizations both in Government and the private sector to learn more about how the different organizations are structured and managed. It is envisaged that these students will be able to develop strategies to create and improve processes in an organization.
The Commissioner was able to inform the students on the operations of Government, highlighting the national vision of the National Sustainable Development Plan 2016-2020, the vision of the Public Sector Strategy 2016-2025 and the functions of the Office of the Public Service Commissioner. The Commissioner stressed that we are striving for a Public Service of excellence. The students were interested in various issues including the separation of powers between the Judiciary, Executive and Parliament, the difference between Statutory Agencies and the Public Service Departments, how human resource management policies were developed; whether training was provided to Public Servants and how individuals were selected to certain public positions. The exchange of views was appreciated on both sides and the Office of the Public Service Commissioner looks forward to future opportunities to promote the achievements and challenges of the Public Service.
