Rarotonga, Cook Islands 4 February 2025 The Office of the Public Service Commissioner (OPSC) in collaboration with the New Zealand High Commission (NZHC), is pleased to announce that Messers Noel Mani and Tereapii Tumutoa from Te Marae Ora - Ministry of Health have been awarded the Public Health Management Pacific 2025 Short-Term Training Scholarship.
The successful candidates will participate in a two-week residential course (10-21 February) designed to strengthen health systems and promote healthy public policy in their home country. This training opportunity aligns with the Government’s commitment to ensuring robust and resilient health systems that can effectively address public health threats while supporting affordable, inclusive, and accessible health services.
The Public Health Management Pacific programme provides an invaluable opportunity for public health professionals to enhance their expertise and contribute to the ongoing development of health policies and systems in Cook Islands. Learning to critically appraise and synthesize evidence from various sources as well as how to establish and sustain partnerships to improve population health, how to apply ethical and culturally safe principles in public health practice as well as strengthening leadership in advocating sustainability and health equity are some of the skills that they will develop.
The Public Service Commissioner, Mr Carl Hunter, acknowledges the support of the New Zealand High Commission in facilitating these professional development opportunities for public servants. He expects that, upon their return, they will be able to reflect on and critique personal social, cultural, and professional perspectives and their impact on public health and share these learnings with their work colleagues in Te Marae Ora to further strengthen health outcomes and equity in our communities.
