Public Sector Orientation: Strengthening Knowledge and Collaboration
Rarotonga, Cook Islands, 25 March 2025, The Public Sector Orientation held on 25 March 2025 at the ArePua Gateway Community Church, brought together 44 public servants from 12 Government agencies, reinforcing the commitment to a well-informed and effective Public Sector. Attendees represented the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance & Economic Management, Crown Law Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Cook Islands Audit Office, Infrastructure Cook Islands, Ministry of Agriculture, Office of the Public Service Commissioner, Ministry of Education – Cook Islands Tertiary Training Institute, Office of the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Immigration.
This quarterly programme provides an overview of the Cook Islands Government and its machinery through a series of structured modules, ensuring that new and existing public servants gain a deeper understanding of their roles and relationships within the wider Government framework. More than just an introduction, the sessions serve as a platform for cross-sector engagement and collaboration.
The day commenced with a welcome by the Public Service Commissioner who highlighted the significance of continuous learning and inter-agency cooperation in delivering high-quality, public services. Participants engaged in presentations and discussions covering key government functions, policies and expectations of public servants.
Feedback from participants underscored the value of these sessions in fostering a stronger sense of purpose and connection within the Public Sector. One participant noted “The orientation gave me a clearer understanding how the different ministries work together and where my role fits in the bigger picture.” Another highlighted the interactive nature of the programme, stating that, they “… appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and hear real-life examples that made the material more relevant.”
Additional comments reflected an improved understanding of the role of the Office of the Public Service Commissioner (OPSC), the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management (MFEM), and the broader functions of Government. Participants also found value in learning about the Public Service values and how they apply in their day-to-day roles, strengthening their commitment to ethical and effective service delivery.
As part of the ongoing efforts to enhance Public Sector capabilities, future sessions will continue to adapt based on participant feedback, ensuring that the content remains relevant and engaging.
